Not a good day for Maramures gates, trees, church roofs… and drunk bus stops.

It was all a bit surreal. The weather was calm, it was a normal evening. Within 20 seconds the trees were shaking like they were about snap…. and then a sudden huge gust came through and ‘crack crack crack’ they dropped like flies. I had that “Tsunami 2” feeling but luckily was for only a few seconds, the wind dying down and within 20 mins the sun was out again like nothing had happened. It could have been a lot worse. No one hurt and no big trees crashed into the houses. Many roofs off, many trees down just when they were about to produce this year’s much-needed crop of fruit that we have been denied for some years now. Anyway, life goes on and they say the power will be back on soon. And every story has a silver lining, literally. See the last pic in the set 🙂 As I arrived down at the hotel to see the damage, the winds were waving goodbye with a nice rainbow. The colours in the sky where amazing. We then started to see the damage that is everywhere in the village of Breb. On taking guests to dinner we called ahead to see if she was OK to still serve. She said she was fine and didn’t mention it might be a bit tricky to get into the house now the gate was down. Next morning amazingly most haystacks were in tack. This one getting some help to be straight again. Maybe 10 – 15 trees are down around the hotel. This will become a table stand one feels. This huge...

Want to work for the Village Hotel? We are hiring.

Want to work for one of the best known hotels in Maramures? Want to learn international tourism techniques and practice your foreign language skills so you can get a job aboard after working here? We are looking for a “Pension all rounder” some one who is capable and happy to do the following: The job Clean the rooms, the houses are old and have dust etc and so takes quite a bit of cleaning on each changeover. This can be up to 20 beds on a busy day. That’s very rare and you will not be expected to do 20 beds on your own. But most of the time will be from 1 to 5-bed changeovers a day. Plus cleaning the houses and kitchen etc. Laundry – yes, this is a trainee position and you get to learn all parts of the business 🙂 We have a well-equipped laundry at the hotel and so once the rooms are cleaned the linen needs cleaning and ironing. You need to be customer friendly, this is a small hotel and so every one is multi tasking. This is your chance to learn reception skills. If you can speak OK English, you are expected to talk with guests, to answer their questions, help with maps, things to do and to take them to dinner with locals in the Village or up at the sheep stations if you have a driving license. You are not expected to deal with booking, but you do have the opportunity to learn an industry standard booking system if your written English is good enough. You work 5 days...
Making hay – before it rains in Maramures

Making hay – before it rains in Maramures

On the way to the sheep station, I drove with my guest past the Guitain in Breb and there they were, hurrying along before those big black clouds dropped it’s rain on that dry hay they had spent all day raking in.  It always amazes me to see families still making hey the way their Grandparents did.  We stopped and took some pics and then get caught in the down pour so opted not to have dinner up the mountain as planned and ended up in Ocnar...
Happy New Year – So what does 2016 have in store for the VH?

Happy New Year – So what does 2016 have in store for the VH?

Happy New Year every one. The village hotel is still open this winter all the way through to the summer so if you want to get away from it all, we are open and have the home fires burning 🙂 So, 2016? What the plan, we have a photography tour at easter, and more thought out the year, we will hopefully be moving forward with the dinning room and producing more of our own food. Hence this idea of an under ground green house – we want to make one in the field next to the hotel, imagine fresh tomatoes for Christmas dinner this  year 🙂...

Solar eclipse tour in Maramures this weekend. Who’s in?

Solar eclipse tour in Maramures this weekend. Who’s in?

A partial solar eclipse, during which the moon will cover more than half of the sun’s disc, will take place on Friday, March 20, between 10:48 and 13:04 and the peak will be at 11:55, in Romania. “It will be visible from across the country, best from the northwest region and not so good from the southeastern extreme,” according to researcher Adrian Sonka from the Astronomical Observatory “Amiral Vasile Urseanu” in Bucharest. So that means it will be good in Maramures.  Come on! Lets do it 🙂 It will be the only such phenomenon visible in Romania this year and over the next five years. The next sun eclipse visible from Romania will take place on March 21, 2020, when the moon will cover 11% of the sun’s disc. So, who in? I am. Who wants to come and experience it and photograph it with me? I have 6 places in my jeep. Come stay at the Village Hotel and we will go out on the Friday night looking for the right spot to photograph it and capture the moment and Saterday night, we make a Golash around the fire and drink horinca and compare pics. 150 euro per person including meals, accommodation and a little night adventure on Friday night hunting for the moon and the prefect eclipse shot. Email me direct on [email protected] and lets make it happen...

Traditional Wedding in Maramures

My neighbor got married at the weekend. It’s great to see that some things have not changed in Breb; it’s a matter of time and it will all be different, but for now – life, and weddings, go on like they always did. Except for Johns shoes…. and the girls, they are definitely different...
